Hackney, St. Mary of Eton with St. Augustine, London E9, UK

A massive building, Victorian looking (I don't know for sure but it fits given the area). It's on Eastway in E9 and easy to drive past without really noticing. The tower has several gargoyles high up, ugly and demonic but purely decorative no plumbing involved. Photos Feb 2001 (500mm lens)

St. Pancras, Midland Grand Hotel, Central London, UK.

This huge Victorian Gothic building, utterly over the top and magnificent is the frontage for St. Pancras station (though officially not actually part of the station itself). Described by Douglas Adams (of HitchHiker's Guide to the Universe fame) as the earthly manifestation of Valhalla, home of the Norse Gods. You can see why. The towers and various bits are covered in non-plumbing gargoyles, though most are very high up and hard to see, definitely need binoculars. Disappointingly they all look to be the same style, but they are demonic ones. Photos ? 2001

These are enlarged from the turret picture but too small to expand more, clicking does nothing.

Royal Academy Of Arts, Piccadilly, Central London, UK.

A good looking building, ornate but not too much, including real gargoyle plumbing which surprised and impressed me whilst idly staring out of the window of the Number 38 bus. Only a happy snapper camera so I ought to go back and see what else there is. Photos ? 2001

You can just make out the gargoyles on these pics, but only just. It's less a record and more an encouragement to look up when you wander round London. On the first picture, the three on the shelfy bit across the middle of the picture I'm pretty sure are plumbing. On the second picture, note the four fishy things that seem to have orifices, all a bit of a blur through the bus window.

These are poor quality enlargements from the second picture, they don't do anything when you click, they're just to give a hint of what's there.

Shoreditch, Town Hall, London, UK

The front of the townhall has many carved faces in plaque form on keystones, each representing some aspect of importance to the East End seat of local government. Most definitely not gargoyles, but anyway I'll leave them here for now. This is a small selection. Photos Apr 2001 (200mm lens)

  • Shepherd's Bush baptist Church, London - More Victorian Gothic dragons

Shepherd's Bush Baptist Church, Shepherd's Bush, London, UK

Another classic Victorian thing with dragon-like gargoyles on the tower. I think there are 4, but I was in a tearing hurry and couldn't check the 4th. It's now a Baptist church which makes it the only one I've noticed with gargoyles on. Photos ? 200? 28-200mm lens
