Ickburgh, St Peter's, Norfolk, UK.

St Peter's Church, Ickburgh (nr Mundford), South Norfolk. About 9 pretty amazing gargoyles, massive and detailed complex carvings flanking the nave low down and easily visible just by walking round, some older ones on the tower. Despite the church being only a few hundred yards from a regular route, I didn't even know it was there until contacted by David Owner who is also interested in carvings, particularly in the Green Man, see The Green Man in East Anglia. I'm indebted to him for the best photos, the rather poorer ones below his are mine. Photos Apr 2002, David Owner, Olympus OM20 with Tokina 70-210 mm Kodak Gold 200.

The gargoyles flanking the nave are in pretty good un-weathered condition, the nave itself is clad in black flint and more neatly built than the tower, all of which makes me suspect that the main part of the church has been rebuilt, maybe in Victorian times but without further info that's just an educated guess.

Here's the church and the front of the tower showing another gargoyle high up.

The first gargoyle is a Jester? or Scowler? or Angry man? notice the cloth-like folds of skin above his nose, very odd. Then two views of a spiny or scaly beast but with paws not claws, maybe a dragon maybe a combination of things.

Here are others flanking the nave outside, hard to decide what some of these could be but they're in lovely condition and very detailed.

I did finally manage to get to see this unusual church and added a few photos of my own. Here's the church again and the gargoyles on the tower. Photos Jun2002, KodakASA400, 28-200mm & 600mm lens for the tower
