ANDROS ![]()
Nope, still not a lot here yet, except for a satellite view and some pictures...
...a recommendation to buy the map of the island produced by the army cartographic service (this information being hidden away on the back cover). It's in a lot of shops now, blue cover ~1000dx with shinier paper than the others, and almost uniquely among maps of Andros, bears more than a passing resemblance to reality. At last, after years of waiting, one that actually works. The others I can recommend only for amusement value.
...and this year's fave rave on the culcha front is... NOT the Henry Moore exhibition, impressive, provoking, boring, interesting and prestigious as it is, the works hanging, standing and sitting squat in the Modern Art museum in Andros town, nice stuff, BUT the bees knees is the Christos Bokoros one up the main street where the pedestrian precinct starts, in the unassuming, almost hidden institution building whose name I can never remember. Nice marble steps outside though. These paintings on wood and various sculptures are done with such an amazing precision and reality that, for example, your brain knows that it's just painted wood but your eyes tell you that you could unfold that linen cloth or boil those eggs. The posters don't show you the half of it, see it for real. If you can get a chance, see it in Athens or wherever you can find it, rare praise indeed from me, it's worth going out of your way for.

You too can have one of these harmless, timid, but large, things making its home in yours.

About the only thing that seems to like thistles
There are four (er, hem) towns on the island. The ferries, Sea-cats and Dolphins arrive at the port of Gavrion which is on the left hand side (west) about three quarters of the way up the island. Batsi the tourist town, main beach and discos etc is about half way up, also on the left. Andros town, or "Hora" (pronounced with a bit of a "ch" as in "loch" instead of "H") is the capital and culture centre, about a quarter of the way up. Korthi is a bit futher south.
This is the only Andros site that I know of so far, it's got an introduction to the island, a history, lots of pictures and quite a lot about Korthi - the southernmost town. If you want more info, there's a good A4 sized booklet by Alexandra Britten available on the island.
